The other day my daughter was given a t-shirt from Asda/George that cost just £2, it made me want to cry. Clothing is always made by hand and given that the item only cost £2 the person making it must surely have been paid less than 20p for making it, costs such as fabric/shipping and then Asda’s profit would have left the person with barely nothing.
What sort of life must they live? I’ve lived in Nepal, a very poor country, and know that even there 20p doesn’t go far. It represents a survival wage, not a living wage. However we in the West try to justify it or ignore it, we are expoiting and abusing the workers who make things for us in developing countries. By buying items that cost just £2 we are telling Asda and other retailers that we don’t mind that abuse and when the money changes hands we take part in that abuse too.
