Arcadia have replied – Ethical by Code of Conduct

Arcadia Group (representing Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Evans, Miss Selfridge, Outfit, Top Shop, Top Man and Wallis) have responded to my letter asking about how their garments are produced.

They have declined to answer the questions directly, even easy ones such as where their garments are made, but have at least responded – unlike Adams, Asda/George and Debenhams!

Like Boots, they seem to think the answer to improving conditions for their workers in the developing world is a Code of Conduct.  I’m sure this does something for their workers but I’m sure more could be done.  I get the impression that Arcadia don’t quite grasp the scale of the problem – factory managers may not tell the absolute truth (gasp!) – nor the massively positive effect they could make in their workers lives if they really undertook to provide them better training, teaching, housing, healthcare and education for their children.

If you would like to read the response from Arcadia in full then please go to their response page, listed on the left.
